"I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation".
This was said by Lord Macaulay when he first explored India. Consider the situation in India today! Although India is not the poorest nation, poverty exists in every nook and corner, justified by the very fact that one can invariably find beggars on every street. Coming to the moral values, well more than 60% of news letters that we subscribe are filled with gory acts of violence and this is present all across India, through its length and breadth. When i tried to find the probable reasons for all of this, there was only one definite reason that i was able to gather, "the change in our culture, our thoughts and spirituality" which was exactly what Lord Macaulay intended to bring about.
Role Of The Youth:
I strongly feel that the youth has a major role to play towards bringing India back to its glorious state. This is extremely vital considering the fact that by 2020, India will have the youngest working population out of all the bigger economies. Considering the history of any nation, in order to realize the transition from a developing nation to a developed nation, the youth of the country has to go through a phase where in they have dreams about things that can be done to their country, but with the new found freedom ( that they were aspiring for!), they always come up with many hindrances and hence they generally fall short of their expectations.
This has been happening from the beginning of mankind, right from the time of the great epic "Mahabharatha" to the present day. The unjust or the untrue forces are always more powerful and more efficient than the true or the just forces. When the youth of the nation realizes this truth, they tend to justify a whole lot of empty arguments filled with a whole lot of noisy logic. In other words there is a sense of escapism amongst the youth of the nation. What is required at this stage is a great Master who can show the youth towards the righteous path. It is only obvious that with the kind of people our mother nation has had, we are not short of these great masters, right from "a purist" like Gandhiji to "a bundle of passion and courage" like Bhagat Singh and several other great legends. Every person who falls in this category of legends has a unique and diverse lifestyle and thus he or she provides us with an excellent and inspiring example to co-relate ourselves with their lifestyles and hence provide a pathway to achieve similar things that they have.
With the innumerable resources that we possess, one might wonder what could be hindering us from adopting a culture that will lead us to formulate a prosperous country. I would love to hear from someone who has found reasons for the youth to avoid the existing resources. Well i feel that this is the point where the concept of "Western Culture" comes in. I want to make it very clear that i have no reservations against any culture but the fact that bothers me is, that we are blindly adopting western culture even without a cautious effort to understand what our culture is all about. One thing i want to iterate infinitely is that the pleasure that one can derive out of the adoption of western culture is very momentary and extremely materialistic. On the contrary, let us observe the effects of adopting true Indian culture. The pleasure that you derive is a matter of experience. I can quote an instance: According to the facts that i conceived from a few books that i read, say in a village, if a villager gets a chance to earn big money, he would do so but he would come back and spend it with his fellow villagers towards the development of the village and in fact for the development of its people. Now let us look at what we would have done (with the culture that we have adopted), we would have either spent it on property or on a vehicle. Now compare the pleasure that you would have derived with people from the village thanking you for what you have done, and the pleasure with you buying a new car. Well in my books its incomparable.
Indian culture is all about a matter of experiencing true pleasure as quoted by the "The Bhagvad Geeta", "The Quran" and "The Bible". This is a very simple example that i have quoted. I can quote a lot of examples, each of them underlining the greatness of Indian culture. |
